My goal in making A Shoot From The Root was to capture all at once the spirit of the originators of the New Orleans sound - the Indians, the Mardi Gras, the happy sound of what causes the music to flow. This album is a one-of-a-kind because of the musicians and their remarkable level of playing. Herlin Riley, formerly with Wynton Marsallis and other top groups around the nation, is one of the top drummers in the world, Chris Severin, one of the greatest bassists, and Carl LeBlanc, one of the greatest guitarists. All are capable of playing any style while maintaining New Orleans' unique rhythmic patterns. Putting a rhythmic section of that caliber along with the caliber of the horns and background singers, I've surrounded myself with people who understand the harmonics. The guest artists are Bo Dollis of the Wild Magnolia Indians, who has a very unique approach to the New Orleans music, Johnny Adams, the 'Songbird of New Orleans', and Earl King, who has his own unique style of vocals, guitar and composition. At one time we all seemed to be going in different directions, but this time we're all together in one unit on a PARTY-type album, because party is what you do with your friends! Eddie Bo |

My purpose for making BACK UP THIS TRAIN was to recapture the happy dance groove I experienced in the 70's. It was then that the catchy rhythmic patterns enhanced the horn licks in complimentary form. Careful planning was necessary to emulate this sound. I needed specific ingredients to accomplish this feat. Louis "Red" Morgan, leader of the Funk Generals, has a most unique approach to his saxophone playing. Fred Kemp, horn arranger extraordinaire and band leader for Fats Domino, was essential for this accomplishment. Mark Braud, on trumpet, provided the exact horn licks I was looking for. With the combined talents, we were able to create a pocket fusion of impeccable strength - a rhythmic gumbo. Simply put, this rhythm section is top of the line.
